消防員主業是打火救人，經過學校嚴格專業訓練，抓蛇捕蜂卻是為民服務的重點項目，經土法煉鋼後，捕蛇技巧與蛇種判別成為代代相傳的經驗學，日前嘉義消防員傳出疑似捕獲本土與外來種雜交的「米克斯蛇」，證實是烏龍一場。嘉義大學生物資源系助理教授許富雄表示，學理上，所有生物都是同種配對，不同種的蛇基本上不太可能自然混種交配產生米克斯蛇。台灣本土種蛇約有60種，約有10種毒蛇對人有危害，蛇的外觀特徵會隨著不同成長階段而改變，光憑外觀特徵要辨認蛇種，對欠缺專業的人是難題。

嘉義市消防員日前接獲為民服務案件，從機車後車燈捕獲一尾蛇，牠為躲避被捕命運，從機車頭一路溜鑽到後車燈，捲曲成一團，窩在車燈縫隙裡，2名消防員各持1支捕蛇器，掐頭夾尾，把牠揪出來，為民除患。這尾蛇經消防員目測加上網搜尋資料比對，推測是有毒的龜殼花，卻被眼尖網友打臉，指該蛇絕不是龜殼花。此事傳開，有民眾懷疑，因時下流行養寵物蛇，外來品種的蛇入境，已累積到相當的量，加上常見民眾棄養寵物蛇，莫非被棄養的外來種與台灣本土蛇混交，產生新的「米克斯」蛇？擔任消防員20多年的嘉市消防局第二分隊小隊長侯閔評說，以前在嘉義常見、捕獲的蛇多是錦蛇、臭青母、南蛇、雨傘節、眼鏡蛇等，近幾年來捕獲的蛇顯得多樣化，至於日前捕獲的蛇，後來進一步比對，證實是大頭蛇。侯閔評說，消防人員在警校沒接受捕蛇技巧訓練，也欠缺辨識蛇種的專業學識，由學長帶學弟傳授經驗、查資料，如此練功夫，累積經驗，通常從外觀辨識有沒有毒，如三角頭形、斑紋、顏色等外觀特徵，總是謹慎為上策，難辨蛇種就一律以毒蛇的高規格處理，以免被蛇咬。(中國時報)，
