美國西南部科羅拉多州和新墨西哥州兩條河川遭廢棄金礦外洩的有毒廢水重創，汙染流域長達130公里，兩州與印第安人納那瓦霍族保留區自治政府（Navajo Nation）10日皆宣布進入緊急狀態，釋出額外經費對應災變。新州也準備對這次重金屬汙染的始作俑者聯邦環境保護署（EPA）採取法律行動。科州西南部希爾莫頓鎮附近停產多年的「金王礦區」（Gold King Mine），最近發生攔壩受損，廢水與礦渣緩洩事件，EPA小組本月5日督導防阻作業進行時，挖土機不慎導致富含重金屬離子的酸性礦山排水如洪澇般外洩，近1140萬公升黃褐色汙水，一路經由水泥溪沖刷進入阿尼瑪斯河，並直下新州西北部聖胡安河。

沿途城鎮已停止自兩河取水飲用、灌溉，專家也密集從事兩河水質重金屬檢測，數日內將可判定是否已遭鉛、砷、汞等致癌物嚴重汙染。EPA當初估計，只有380萬公升廢水洩入阿尼瑪斯河，後修正為3倍之多，如此疏怠，也普遭科、新兩州政府與環保組織抨擊。EPA署長麥錫女士11日則首度公開認錯，承諾將全力善後。據EPA觀測，廢水向下游擴散後，已逐漸稀釋淡化。環保團體「美國河流」也稱，阿尼瑪斯河流經杜蘭戈的河段位在排放點南方80公里處，水色9日從黃褐轉為亮萊姆綠，11日又轉為深藍綠，顯示河川表面漸趨清澈。但有專家表示，廢水重金屬已沉積於河川沉澱物，造成的環境衝擊才是長期隱憂，一旦風暴來襲或河水氾濫，重金屬沉積物可能翻攪而起。此外，有毒廢水若續往猶他州科羅拉多河鮑威爾湖水庫（內華達州賭城拉斯維加斯用水來源）與米德湖水庫（供應南加州洛杉磯等地用水）擴散，美國西南部地區供水的致癌物含量背景值將為之升高。(中國時報)，
