前總統李登輝在新書《新．台灣的主張》中，形容自己是「接受日本統治時代教育，並且成為志願士兵的台灣青年。」當年與哥哥志願成為日本兵，「一心懷抱著為國家挺身作戰、光榮赴死的理想。」近日又投書日本媒體，大談二戰期間的台灣人「身為日本人，為了祖國而戰。」我相信：李登輝的說法是他的「本音」（真心話）。可是，這種說法是台籍志願兵普遍的經驗嗎？

二次大戰之初，台灣人並沒有資格當「日本兵」，只能當「軍屬」或「軍伕」，到中國大陸華中、華南、華北各地，協助日軍作戰。「軍伕」擔任炊事、衛生、搬運「兵站物品」等後勤工作。「軍屬」則大多為中學校畢業生，懂當地語言，擔任通譯、宣撫或調查工作。1942年，太平洋戰爭情勢逆轉，日本才開始在台灣徵「志願兵」。根據日本厚生省的記載，從1937到1945年間，台灣總督府總共招募了軍屬、軍伕12萬，軍人8萬，總共20萬；其中3萬多人陣亡。在台灣志願兵中，有一些人被派到南洋去當「盟軍戰俘營監視員」。他們所受的「基本軍訓」之一，就是學習如何打耳光。到了南洋之後，他們「穿著英挺的日軍制服，背著上了刺刀的步槍，在俘虜營前站衛兵」，命令被日軍俘虜的盟軍士兵「挑砂石、挖地洞、採銅礦、建機場，在最飢餓的狀態下做苦役。」在必要時候，他們也會在日本軍官的指揮之下，凌虐戰俘。戰後的紀錄顯示：盟軍在日軍俘虜營中總共有35萬人，每100名俘虜中有27名死亡，是盟軍在德國和義大利戰俘營中死亡率的7倍。在戰後的審判中，有173個台籍「日本兵」被起訴，其中26人被判死刑。另外7個人因為「於北婆羅洲的美里及其附近，射殺及刺殺46名俘虜」，一審被判死刑，一個月後再審，改判10年徒刑。在《大江大海》中，龍應台提到：2009年，她循線到彰化縣和美鎮訪問7人之一的柯景星，對這位已經90多歲的老人進行訪談。他描述當時狀況：「我們十幾個人把4、50個俘虜圍起來」，「隊長杉田鶴雄就命令我們殺人。不服從命令，我們就要被殺。」「之前有教我們刺槍術，教刺槍術的教練是在天皇前面表演第一名的。」「隊長一聲令下，就統統用刺刀刺死。」戰後審判時，這群台灣兵坐在椅子上，軍事法庭安排澳洲俘虜出庭指證，「一個耳光換5年」。柯景星當場被判死刑。他的感覺是「我真的要死了嗎？死了還沒人哭啊！」「第二天改判10年，很高興！」他被關7年半之後，因為英皇登基才被特赦，回到台灣。我想請教李登輝先生的是：上一代的台籍「志願兵」真的是「日本兵」嗎？他們有罪嗎？他們應當受到這樣的懲罰嗎？李登輝說：「在軍隊裡，有時被反覆摑掌，或被迫洗丁字布，但我並不記得有什麼特別嚴苛的待遇。」當時負責訓練的日本軍士官經常嘲笑台灣兵：「人人嫌避的軍隊，居然有人志願進來當馬鹿」。「馬鹿」一辭很難有適當的中文翻譯。李登輝應當很了解這句話的意思吧？（作者為台灣大學心理系教授）(中國時報)，
